Dear Friends, The spring has arrived! For many among us, spring is the season of hope that brings life and action back after the dim and glum winter. KAGW is welcoming Spring 2008 by surpassing yet another major milestone. We are embarking on the idea of a mega youth festival for our children in the Greater Washington region that we believe stretches from the Carolinas to Delaware. Back in our school days, we all are accustomed to the mega youth festivals in Kerala. We at KAGW strongly feel that the Malayalee population in the Greater Washington region has reached that critical mass to support and sustain such a major youth festival on an annual basis. The extended Spring Festival on April 5th and April 19th that showcases various arts and cultural competitions to the younger Malayalees of the region is the result of such a buoyant assessment. We also witness that the cultural grounding of our youngsters in their parents’ adopted land is coming of age and turning more convinced and confident. Yes, the "American Born Confused Desis" of yesterday are slowly becoming the "American Born Confident Desis" of today. The appeal for quicker assimilation is slowly giving way to the assertion of Indian cultural identity irrespective of their place of birth. The status of Indian-ness is undergoing a rapid make over from being the complimentary condiment to the essential red meat in the American mixing bowl. The majority of Desi children now are more proud proponents of their heritage thanks to the unparalleled success of their parents in their adopted lands as well as the swell in the name recognition of India all around the world. Being the flagship Indian association in the Washington metro region, KAGW believe that we have moral obligation as parents to facilitate this positive transformation in our children’s outlook. The events such as the upcoming Youth Festival on April 5th and April 19th with the mega public function on April 19th evening is a bold new step in that direction.
